The Cancer Behavior Inventory (CBI), a measure of self-efficacy for coping with cancer, was used to examine the feasibility and impact of a self-management program for women with breast cancer. This controlled clinical trial was conducted on newly diagnosed breast cancer patients, using a time series, block design. Sixty-nine patients were allocated to receive four weekly sessions of the self-management training program, while 78 patients were allocated to the control (usual-care) group.A significant difference was found between the means of the experimental and the control group at post-test (T2; P=.01) and at follow-up (T3; P=.02). The multivariate analyses of the three repeated measures showed significant differences (P=.001; partial eta-squared = 0.092). Pair-wise comparison shows that the differences were significant between baseline (T1) measure and follow-up (T3) measure (P=.01), and between post-test (T2) and follow-up (T3) (P=.03).For women undergoing intervention, the cancer-specific self-efficacy as measured by the cancer-behavior-coping inventory showed improvement over time. The result demonstrated that the self-management program to improve self-care correlates significantly with coping behavior in cancer. A larger and longer study of this efficacy-enhancing intervention is warranted. HubMed – rehab

Asbestos’s production, processing, and consumption is on very high scale in India and it is increasing, and so do the related diseases. Asbestosis is such a disease which causes progressive respiratory disability.To find out perceptions and thinking about this disease and its risk among the patients which will help in constructing an effective community-based prevention and rehabilitation program.It was a community-based, qualitative study using a semi-structured interview schedule with 17 asbestosis patients from Mumbai, disgnosed by specialist with pulmonary function test and X-rays as per International Labour Organisation’s recommandations.The risk percived by the patients is very less and attitude toward the illness is bengine as there is no clear understanding about the causation. The prolong latent period appears to be the main cause. It suggests a need of very strong program for prevention of asbestosis with the incorporation of worker awareness and eduaction for safety. The socio-economical status and educational levels of the workers make this floating population more vulnarable for manipulation by the corporates.Apart from the radical step of ban on asbestos, there is a need of community-based sustainable, affordable, and accessible rehabilitation program with a component of palliative care which will consider the different needs of this marginalized group. The need for such a program is intense as the number of asbestisis patients will keep on increasing till 30 to 40 years of asbestos ban. HubMed – rehab
Internal pressure of human meniscal root attachments during loading.

This study investigated the internal fluid pressure of human cadaver meniscal root attachments. A pressure micro-sensor was implanted inside each attachment site. Tibiofemoral joints were compressed to 2× body weight at various flexion angles and pressure recorded for 20?min. The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) was then transected and joints retested. Lastly, a longitudinal incision of the lateral posterior (LP) horn was made and the joint retested. Ramp pressure was defined as the pressure when 2× body weight was reached, and equilibrium pressure was recorded at the end of the hold period. The medial posterior (MP) attachment was subjected to greater ramp pressure than the medial anterior (p?=?0.002) and greater equilibrium pressure than all other root attachment sites (p?0.001). Flexion angle had a significant effect on pressure as full extension was greatest at ramp (p?=?0.040). Transection of the ACL decreased ramp pressure in the LP attachment (p?=?0.025) and increased equilibrium pressure (p?=?0.031) in the MP attachment. The results suggest that repair strategies should be developed which reconstruct the MP attachments to be sufficient to withstand large pressures. Furthermore, since meniscal pressure is highest at full extension, this fact should be considered when prescribing rehabilitation following repair of an attachment. © 2013 Orthopaedic Research Society Published by Wiley Periodicals, Inc. To provide a critical contemporary review of daily PDE5-inhibitor (PDE5-I) use in urological and nonurological conditions. PDE5-Is can be taken up to once a day. However, at present only tadalafil is approved for use in both erectile dysfunction (ED) and benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). Evolving research in penile rehabilitation, Peyronie’s disease, male infertility, pulmonary arterial hypertension, muscular dystrophy and Raynaud’s phenomenon shows these therapeutic areas may also benefit from PDE5i therapy. This review examines the role of chronic PDE5 inhibition in ED, BPH-LUTS and other therapeutic targets which may shape our clinical practice in the years to come. HubMed – rehab
