Eating Disorders Affect Younger Children Than Previously Thought – “A recent report by the American Academy of Pediatrics found that eating disorders are occurring amongst younger boys and girls. Anorexia and bulimia have historically been thought of as afflictions affecting white, middle-upper class teenage girls. However, the new study found that eating disorders do not discriminate between age, gender, race or class. As many as 10% of children suffering from eating disorders are under the age of ten. The 2009 analysis also showed eating disorder-related hospitalizations more than doubled among children under the age of twelve. Director of the Eating Disorder Program at Packard Children’s Hospital Dr. Jim Lock said that, with younger children having eating disorder problems, pediatricians need to be more alert. He said, “”Pediatricians need to be aware of the early symptoms of eating disorders because they are the medical professional that a child is mostly likely to see in any given year. They are the gatekeepers.”””
