Building a European Consensus on Minimum Quality Standards for Drug Treatment, Rehabilitation and Harm Reduction.

Eur Addict Res. 2013 Jun 14; 19(6): 314-324
Schaub MP, Uchtenhagen A

Background/Aims: The Study on the Development of an EU Framework for Minimum Quality Standards and Benchmarks in Drug Demand Reduction (EQUS) has set up an inventory of quality standards and initiated a consensus-building process, aiming at establishing a set of European minimum quality standards (MQS) for treatment/rehabilitation and harm reduction in the field of drug abuse and dependence. Methods: Existing documents were collected by country-specific experts and integrated into a predefined framework of quality standards. Agreement, implementation status and expected implementation problems of the proposed standards were assessed by a survey of European stakeholders and the final lists of European MQS were established at a European conference. Results: Overall, 349 documents were identified as relevant. Major gaps were identified for ethical and legal standards, and for documents that provide grades of evidence for specific standards. A high level of acceptance was found for the treatment/rehabilitation MQS, while a somewhat lower level was found for the harm reduction MQS. The final lists of MQS were based on at least 80% of acceptance by European experts and stakeholders. Conclusion: A high consensus of European MQS for treatment/rehabilitation and harm reduction has been achieved. Further implementation and developmental steps are discussed. HubMed – rehab

Design of a wearable sensing system for human motion monitoring in physical rehabilitation.

Sensors (Basel). 2013; 13(6): 7735-55
González-Villanueva L, Cagnoni S, Ascari L

Human motion monitoring and analysis can be an essential part of a wide spectrum of applications, including physical rehabilitation among other potential areas of interest. Creating non-invasive systems for monitoring patients while performing rehabilitation exercises, to provide them with an objective feedback, is one of the current challenges. In this paper we present a wearable multi-sensor system for human motion monitoring, which has been developed for use in rehabilitation. It is composed of a number of small modules that embed high-precision accelerometers and wireless communications to transmit the information related to the body motion to an acquisition device. The results of a set of experiments we made to assess its performance in real-world setups demonstrate its usefulness in human motion acquisition and tracking, as required, for example, in activity recognition, physical/athletic performance evaluation and rehabilitation. To study the utilization situation of harm reduction services among drug users and to analyze the reasons of the drug users’ absence in the services as well as their evaluation of the services quality based on the gender perspective, and then to provide advice on the improvement of harm reduction services in the future.Cross-sectional surveys were carried out in four cities of Yunnan Province. The information was collected from the drug users in the drug rehabilitation centers and communities through outreach workers. The utilization of methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) and needle exchange service, the reason of the drug users’ absence in the services and the evaluation towards the convenience, acceptability, as well as services quality were all surveyed. The valid samples were 579 with sex ratio 50.8% (male) and 49.2% (female). Most of the respondents (56.3%) had an educational level of junior high school and 44.0% were single. There were 61.8% (358/579) of respondents who used to utilize MMT service with female participation rate being 57.5%, which was lower than the male one (P<0.05). And there were 58.2% (223/383) of the respondents who used to exchange needles from the outreach workers or needle exchange points with female participation rate being 52.9%, which was lower than the male one (P<0.05). The leading cause of the drug users' absence in the services was their lack of understanding about the services. Among the people who used to utilize the services, the evaluations of women were better than those of men.Drug users have a low awareness of harm reduction services and female drug users are lack of the utilization towards services. More publicity and concern on harm reduction services in the future as well as exploration of the services which better fit the traits of women and privacy protection are suggested.
